If you’re like me, a woman over 40 (or over 50, like yours truly), you’ve probably had your fair share of wanting to be skinny at some point in your life.
But here’s the thing—I’ve realized that being skinny is not the goal I should be aiming for, and I want to share with you why.
First off, let’s get real. Most of us, especially as we age, are not naturally built to be skinny. And that’s okay! Chasing after a body type that’s not meant for us can lead to frustration, unhappiness, and constant hunger. Trust me, I’ve been there, and it’s not fun.
So, what’s the alternative? I’ve shifted my focus to being strong and lean instead. This means concentrating on building lean muscle and improving my body composition, which is all about having a better body fat percentage. It’s not about trying to fit into a smaller size or obsessing over the scale. It’s about feeling powerful, healthy, and comfortable in my own skin.
To achieve this, strength training has become my best friend. Incorporating strength training into my workout routine has been a game-changer. It not only helps build muscle but also boosts my metabolism, which we all know tends to slow down as we get older. And guess what? A faster metabolism means burning more calories, even at rest.
Now, let’s talk about diet. High protein is the way to go, ladies! Eating a diet rich in protein can help speed up your metabolism because your body requires more energy to digest protein compared to carbs and fats. I aim for about 160g of protein per day, and it’s made a noticeable difference in my body composition.
So, if you’re still fixated on the idea of getting skinny, I encourage you to shift your mindset. Focus on improving your body composition by building strength and leaning out.
It’s not about being skinny; it’s about being the best, strongest, and healthiest version of yourself.
And remember, we’re all built differently, so embrace your natural frame and work towards a body that feels good and functions well. Let’s get strong and lean together!
